Day 13- Discussion of Final Year Project Proposal

Today's lecture was a continuation of yesterday lecture because today also we discussed about final year project and final year project proposal. At the beginning of the lecture our lecturer Mr. Eranjan asked whether we went to library and checked previous students' FYPs and get an idea. Everyone in the class said yes then he randomly took some people and asked on which area you prefer to do FYP. They came up with different topics some people said they like to do inventory and forecasting system etc.

After that Mr. Ernajan started the lecture. The first topic he discussed was "How to identify a problem?" The reason to discussed about problem is problem is one of the main components in the final year project. He explained it with the following question.
Problem:- In a company sales are not increasing as the fuel expenditures.
Reason:- Because there is no proper distribution.
Solution:- Choose a proper route. For this some algorithm can use.

After that he discussed about how to explain a problem. There are few steps that can follow to explain a problem. Steps are as followed,
Problem Solving Technique (Problem Solving Techniques, 2012)
  1. Quantify the problem
  2. Provide evidence (Statistics)
  3. Objective of the project- What are you trying to achieve at the end of 9 months. Objective should be SMART.  - Mr Eranjan gave an example of an objective :- Develop a system to increase the efficiency of the marketing department from 54%-70% at the end of the project.
  4. Describe your intended methodology and any underlying assumptions. - Methodology target on avoid problems that could encounter while you are doing the project. There are two types of methodologies. They are,

  • Primary research methodology
  • Software development methodology
After that he discussed about a software development methodology, the methodology was evolutionary prototype. We can use this prototype when we find a problem and this prototype helps to overcome from the problem.

Evolutionary Prototype

  1. Identify initial requirement
  2. Initial prototype
  3. Give to users
  4. Users give feedback
  5. Reverse prototype
  6. Give to users- Iterative steps
  7. Satisfy users
  8. Final version
SSADM also a well structured methodology can use to solve a problem.
When use a methodology need to give reason what is the reason to choose this particular methodology need to do critical evaluation and justification.
5. Explain advantages and disadvantages
6. Identify a preliminary time table for the project (project plan) -need to be very detailed.
Work load matrix- How the work is going to split
Work break down structure- Detailed steps of the plan
Then Mr Eranjan discussed how to make a good proposal
  • For the topic can use this format:-
Investigation into research area to develop what type of system for company name.
Ex:- Investigation into multiple criteria decision making and fuzzy logic to develop a loan approval system for NDB bank.
  • Literature review need to include
  • Comparison should be there
  • Critical evaluation
  • Argument- different between two facts
  • Give justification for like why you choose a particular methodology etc.
  • The accuracy of the title
  • The clarity of the aims
  • Academic Requirement
- Adequate depth of study
- Adequate evaluation of subject area
- Adequate referencing
- Adequate software
- Focus on quality not onuantity

Finally Mr Ernajan gave the content of the final year project
  • Abstract- 25 words
  • Introduction
  • Body
  • Conclusion
  • List of references quoted in the text
  • Bibliography (Read for background information but not cited)
  • Appendices
- Questionnaire and other material referred to the text
- Your original project specification
- Your original project plan and revised plan if necessary
- Your personal project log (meeting log)

Learning Outcomes:-

Today I got a better idea about the final year project than yesterday. I understood how to choose a topic, how I need to plan my project, what are the areas need to include in the project and mostly how I can overcome from the problem if I face during my project. Lecture was very important and useful as previous day lecture.
